Vintage 1970s red seed pot by Kiowa artist Art Cody Haungooah is one of a collection of early pieces we acquired.
Standing 3 5/8" tall and 4" diameter, the front is highly detailed with a swirling bird, many feathers including a dance wand.
On the reverse is a Mimbres lizard.
Traditionally hand built with native clay, stone burnished red slip is sgrafitto carved then pit fired.
Haungooah was the grandson of a famous Kiowa scout who also was known for his ledger drawings.
Art Haungooah changed his signature many times, this is an early version.
He was one of the early potters to explore the sgrafitto carving method, along side Joseph Lonewolf, TsePe Gonzales and Tony Da.
